New York, Philadelphia and Boston. Learn all about our Country's rich history on easy 1 day tours while enjoying the nostalgia of train travel. Train travel will help maximize your time together with out the stress of driving and choruses of "When are we going to get there?" Plus, you don't have to fight the traffic, find parking, or rely on maps. Instead you can watch the beautiful scenery and play board games with the kids. Amtrak offers discounted rates for children, seniors and AAA members so bring the whole family! Best time to go: Spring, Summer or Fall with Fall being the most beautiful. Book at least 2-3 months in advance. | | Caribbean/South America: A popular destination during spring break to drive away the winter blues, cruises and hotels should be booked as far in advance as possible to secure the best rates, rooms and locations. Don't want to bring your kids in the middle of a crazy crowd of seniors? There are several non "hot spots" in the Caribbean that are great for families. Riviera Maya, Mexico is about 1 hour south of Cancun and offers a vast array of All-Inclusive options with plenty of activities for the kids and parents. If you want to do more then play volley ball or build sand castles consider a cruise. Princess Cruise Lines is not as popular with the Spring Break crowd but has wonderful programs for kids, teens and adults all in the security of a contained environment. Visit several beautiful islands and pick your favorite for a longer return visit. For a more unusual trip take your family to the mysterious Galapagos Islands where strange wildlife of all types will be sure to plaster awe inspired grins on the faces of your children as they have their picture taken with a giant tortoise. Best time to go: January-July. Book the Caribbean and Mexico by September for Spring Break travel and the Galapagos at least 9-10 months in advance as the ships to this destination are small and fill quickly. | | Europe: It would take several trips to this continent to experience everything there is offered so why not start with something more personal? A great trip for the whole extended family is a Legacy Journey. These trips are tailored exclusively for each family group and traces the family's journey to America. You will start by flying to the country of your family's origin where you will visit local museums, research records and get a feel for what life was like in the days of your ancestors immigration as well as the modern feel of the area. A place you might have lived today had they not immigrated. Next you will travel to a sea port by train, where you will spend a few days to explore the last city your ancestors saw before leaving. The final leg of your journey is a transatlantic cruise to New York where you will visit Ellis Island and research your family records before flying home. This would truly be the trip of a lifetime for any family and one sure to invoke wonderful memories, a sense of place as well as a great pride and appreciation for your family past and present. The easy pace makes it a wonderful fit for all ages. Best time to go: April - October with April/May and September/October being shoulder season months. This type of trip takes a great deal of research and planning and the process should be started at least 9-12 months in advance of a desired departure date. | | Asia:China One of the most unique destinations in the world and highly educational it will surely broaden the minds of young and old alike. From metropolis cities to small villages with cultures to similar yet so different you are sure to love visiting the colorful and illusive Far East. In our own opinion we feel a guided tour is the best way to visit for the first time. Consider a cruise/tour on the Yangtze River. Part of the tour is via river boat which makes traveling with children much easier while still enjoying inland touring. Your children will be the envy of the class as their next show and tell includes pictures of the Great Wall, bartering in the markets and their first taste of authentic Chinese food. Because of the significant cost of airfare and the long flight try to plan as long of a trip as possible. Consider taking 2 separate tours with a few days between in one place to unwind before the next one. Best time to go: May- October. Book at least 6-8 months in advance to allow time for passports, visas, inoculations etc as well as to secure the best space for your family. | | South Pacific: There are so many great places to visit in the SP. Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, New Zealand where you can snow ski and swim all in the same day and of course breathtakingly beautiful islands like Bora Bora and Tahiti. If you don't have much time but want to visit all three there are many cruises that do just that. Or for a longer visit spend a couple days in Fiji or Tahiti before flying to Auckland for a cruise around the island before heading to Sydney, catch a flight up to Cairns for a snorkel or dive on the Great Barrier Reef before returning home. Best time to go: Jan-May for more moderate temperatures. Book at least 5-6 months in advance. | | Africa: Egypt and the Nile Many children and teens (as well as adults) are fascinated by the ancient culture of the Egyptians (I know I am!) and have often dreamed of seeing the great pyramids for themselves. If you never thought of Egypt as a family destination think again! More educational then a whole semester of school your children will experience ancient history and culture come to life! Almost all of Egypt's greatest sights are along the Nile River, Egypt's lifeline so it would make sense to take a river cruise with your children. You only have to unpack once and there are always American meals available when they tire of trying something new. Ride a camel, experience modern local culture exist next to the old, gaze at the beautiful Nile shore scenery as you drift by during dinner. Your kids will never enjoy a museum more then when they are in Egypt! Best time to go: All year round. Book at least 6 months in advance. Try Cunard Line's Ancient Wonders of the Mediterranean cruise for 2 weeks of Ancient history come to life! |
